Decana
The Decana pear
Discovered in France at the beginning of the 19th century, the Decana del Comizio pear – also called Comice pears – is now primarily grown in Italy and the Netherlands. It has a roundish shape, with medium to large-sized fruits. In the past, its thick and short stem was coated with shellac wax to protect the fruit and prevent withering. Today, the red stem remains a symbol of quality and value.
It is a delicate variety, both for its taste and resistance to handling, requiring careful harvesting and processing.

Taste
The Decana pear’s skin is light green at harvest and turns yellow-green when the fruit is ripe. Russeted areas and pinkish hues can appear on the skin in sun-exposed parts. When it reaches ideal ripeness, the flesh is fine, aromatic, and melting, providing a truly special taste experience. It is known as “the pear that melts in your mouth”. Indeed, at the right degree of ripeness, it provides a sense of softness and juiciness.

Harvest
The Decana pear is typically harvested between the third week of August and the beginning of September, when it reaches its ideal ripeness.

Season
The Decana pear is available on the market from the third week of November to the end of April.

QUALITY
Pears’ nutritional value
Pears, appreciated for their taste and juiciness, are a rich source of essential minerals and trace elements. Thanks to their high content of potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, and copper, they support proper cell function. This fruit is highly digestible and offers antioxidant, diuretic, and refreshing benefits, making it an ideal choice for a healthy and low-sodium diet.
Pears are also an excellent source of soluble fiber, such as pectin, which helps remove residues and toxins, lowers cholesterol, and aids in weight loss. The insoluble fiber found in their skin and flesh absorbs some of the sugars consumed with other foods. So, the consumption of this fruit is not only delicious, but also beneficial for health.
