Williams

The Williams pear

Selected in the late 18th century in England, the Williams pear is an ancient variety that has found its ideal habitat in Italy, precisely in the Po Valley. Fruits have a characteristic shape similar to a flask and are medium-sized with a diameter ranging between 60 e 80 mm.

Really fresh and juicy, the Williams pear is perfect for fresh consumption. Moreover, its firm flesh makes it particularly suitable to prepare canned fruit, fruit juice, grappa, fruit salads, pastries, and jams.

Taste

The skin colour of the Williams pear varies from green to yellow depending on ripeness and may have russeted areas. Sun-exposed parts can get a delicate pinkish-red shade. Green fruits are crunchy and juicy. As they mature, their skin turns progressively yellower and their crunchy and juicy flesh turns softer and melting. These pears’ sweet and sugary flavour has a characteristic and irresistible aroma.

Harvest

The Williams pear is typically harvested starting from the second week of August, when it reaches its ideal ripeness.

Season

The Williams pear is available on the market from the second week of August until mid-February.

QUALITY

Pears’ nutritional value

Pears, appreciated for their taste and juiciness, are a rich source of essential minerals and trace elements. Thanks to their high content of potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, and copper, they support proper cell function. This fruit is highly digestible and offers antioxidant, diuretic, and refreshing benefits, making it an ideal choice for a healthy and low-sodium diet.

Pears are also an excellent source of soluble fibre, such as pectin, which helps remove residues and toxins, lowers cholesterol, and aids in weight loss. The insoluble fibre found in their skin and flesh absorbs some of the sugars consumed with other foods. So, the consumption of this fruit is not only delicious, but also beneficial for health.
